Wide Flange Beams (W-Shapes)

Wide flange beams are the workhorse of structural framing. The flanges are parallel-faced and nearly as wide as the beam is deep, which gives W-shapes their "H" cross-section and their strength-to-weight advantage on columns, girders, headers, bridges, mezzanines, and equipment supports. We stock a full range of wide flange steel beams — from compact W4 and W8 sections used for posts, piles, and light framing up to deep sections up to 40” wide for long spans — in ASTM A992, the standard grade for structural steel framing.

I-Beams & Standard (S) Beams

Standard American beams — the classic steel I-beam — have narrower, tapered flanges and a slimmer profile. They're the common choice for residential support beams and headers, lintels, trailers, ramps, and hoist or trolley rails. We stock S-shapes alongside our wide flange inventory, so whichever profile your drawings call for, we can supply it and deliver it to your job site.

Wide flange vs. I-beam — what's the difference?

Both share the "I" cross-section, and the names get used loosely — including "H beam" for heavy wide flange sections. The practical difference: wide flange (W) beams have wider, parallel (non-tapered) flanges, come in deeper sections, and handle heavier loads and longer spans. Standard (S) I-beams have narrower, tapered flanges and suit lighter-duty structural work. Beam callouts read depth × weight: a W12×26 is nominally 12" deep at 26 lb per foot.
