Steel Pipe - A500 & Galvanized

We stock A500 carbon steel pipe from 1/2" through 12" in schedule 40 and schedule 80.

Hot-dip galvanized pipe, stocked 1" through 6" in schedule 40, adds zinc protection for outdoor and corrosion-prone jobs.

Schedule 40 vs. Schedule 80

Schedule is wall thickness: for any given diameter. Schedule 80 pipe has a thicker wall (and smaller inside opening) than schedule 40 which means more strength, more weight. Sch. 40 handles most structural and fence work; step up to sch. 80 where loads or abuse demand it.

Square & Rectangular Steel Tube (A500 HSS)

A500 square and rectangular steel tubing - hollow structural sections, or HSS - we stock 1" × 1/2" × 16 ga. wall up to 20" × 12" × 5/8" wall.

It's the first pick for frames, racking, posts, gates, trailers, and equipment bases:. Clean corners, straight walls, and predictable strength. A513 mechanical tubing is available for tighter-tolerance work.

Round Steel Tube

Round steel tube from 1/2" OD through 20" OD, wall thicknesses 16 ga. to 1" - for rollers, sleeves, railings, frames, and mechanical parts. If you're not sure whether your job calls for round tube or pipe, read on.

Pipe vs. tube - what's the difference?

Mostly how they're measured. Pipe is called out by nominal inside diameter and schedule (a "2-inch sch. 40 pipe" is about 2.375" across the outside). Tube is called out by exact outside diameter and wall thickness.

The material itself overlaps. A500, for example, covers both structural pipe and tube. So if your print says one and your supplier says the other, not to worry. Give us the OD, wall thickness, and length, and we'll quote you the right item and size.

Steel Pipe & Tube FAQs

What's the difference between steel pipe and steel tube?
Pipe is sized by nominal inside diameter plus schedule (wall); tube by exact outside diameter plus wall thickness. Structurally they're the same - A500 covers both - so bring us the dimensions and we'll match the material.

What's the difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 pipe?
Wall thickness. Same outside diameter, thicker wall on sch. 80 - stronger and heavier. Most structural and fence jobs run sch. 40.

Bare or galvanized pipe - which pipe do I need?
Bare pipe for indoor, painted, or non-corrosive uses. Hot-dip galvanized where weather or moisture will get at it. We stock both.

Do you cut pipe and tube to length?
Yes - saw cutting to your cut list is standard, including mitre cuts for frame work.

Do you deliver?
Daily across Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Western and Central NY, or pick up at our warehouse.
